MAK RIF 1 Research Fund

Development of a Timetable Management System for Makerere university. 

To manage the following:

  • Manual timetabling (Excel or paper-based).
  • Clashes in lecture room bookings.
  • Difficulty tracking lecturer availability.
  • Students struggling to access updated timetables.

IITA - USAID Scaling Mel Database

USAID CSA Technology Scaling Project for tracking projects, benefits, beneficiaries, training activities and institution at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Uganda.

USAID requires funded projects to track progress, measure impact, and report outcomes. For IITA’s CSA project in Uganda, the MEL database was designed to:

  • Track projects/activities implemented.
  • Record beneficiaries (farmers, communities, gender disaggregation).
  • Document benefits (yields, income, resilience gains).
  • Monitor training activities (who was trained, where, by whom).
  • Keep a registry of partner institutions involved.
  • Generate reports and dashboards for USAID and stakeholders.

National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL)

Development of a Soil Mapping Tool for NARL.

The key features of the tool includes:

  • Soil Database: Centralized repository of soil test results from different regions
  • GIS Mapping: Interactive maps showing soil fertility status across Uganda. and Layers for soil type, land use, crop suitability zones.
  • Soil Test Integration: Lab results automatically update the database.
  • Crop Suitability Recommendations: Suggests best crops for a given soil type/location.
  • Accessibility: Web platform for policymakers.

Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratory

Development of a Case Statistics Dashboard for DGAL. A Case Statistics Dashboard is a digital platform that summarizes and visualizes data about cases handled by DGAL. This allow management, investigators, policymakers, and stakeholders to track, monitor, and analyze case-related data in real time.

WoSFER Project, Makerere University

Development of a Weather Dissemination for a research project sponsored by IDRC under the CLARE initiative. A Weather Dissemination System is a digital platform that ensures research findings and forecasts are packaged and delivered to end-users in real time.

For WoSFER, this means:

  • Collecting raw weather/climate data from global models, satellites, and local stations.
  • Processing it into interpretable forecasts (daily, weekly, seasonal).
  • Disseminating to users (farmers, local government, NGOs, policymakers).
